Harare, June 18, 2026 – The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has issued a public notice urging prospective buyers of second-hand motor vehicles to verify customs clearance details before making any payments to sellers.
In Public Notice No. 35/2026, issued on June 15, 2026, ZIMRA said the move is aimed at protecting members of the public from purchasing vehicles with irregular importation records and preventing potential revenue losses to the State.
The tax authority advised buyers to confirm the customs clearance status of imported vehicles before completing transactions. According to the notice, verification can be done by submitting supporting documents to designated ZIMRA offices across the country.
Documents required for the verification process include a sale agreement containing the contact details of both the buyer and seller, the vehicle registration book, national identity documents or passports of both parties, a photograph of the vehicle, and customs clearance documents where available.
ZIMRA said the documents can be submitted electronically through email addresses provided for various regional offices, including Beitbridge, Bulawayo, Gweru, Harare, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Mutare.
The authority encouraged members of the public to send the required documents to their nearest ZIMRA office to facilitate verification before purchasing any second-hand imported vehicle.
The initiative forms part of efforts by ZIMRA to enhance compliance with customs regulations, curb vehicle-related fraud and protect consumers from acquiring vehicles that may have outstanding customs obligations or irregular import documentation.
Prospective buyers have been urged to exercise due diligence and seek confirmation from ZIMRA before concluding any vehicle purchase transaction.
