Harare, Zimbabwe – 18 June 2026 – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the tragic bus and train collision that occurred at a level crossing in Triangle a National Disaster following the loss of nine lives and injuries sustained by several passengers.

In a condolence message issued on 17 June 2026, the President expressed profound shock and sorrow over the accident, describing it as a devastating tragedy for the nation.

The accident claimed the lives of nine people, including school children, in what the President said was a particularly heartbreaking loss. The incident comes barely a week after another tragedy that resulted in the deaths of seven school children under similar circumstances.

President Mnangagwa extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families on behalf of the Government, ZANU-PF, the people of Zimbabwe and himself. He also wished those injured and receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

"The grief caused by this tragedy to the affected families is immeasurable and keenly felt by all of us as a nation," said the President.

To support affected families and ensure adequate assistance for those injured, the President directed Government to declare the accident a National Disaster. The declaration is expected to facilitate the mobilisation of resources and support for victims and their families.

Authorities continue to assess the full impact of the accident as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision proceed.
